ROLL TIDE

17 National Championships –

I have been fortunate enough to witness the last 8 in person.

Funny thing is, in Alabama, seldom do you pick your “Team”.  It is usually handed down generation to generation.   You are either a Bama fan, or a fan of the team on the plains. Cool

My greatest memories of the Crimson Tide are numerous.  From my late Father and I listening to John Forney and Doug Layton paint the picture of each play via the radio in our living room, to watching the 92 National Championship Game live in NOLA with my late Mother.  Or the 2012 National Championship with our late son, Justin Hornsby. Seeing the last 5 National Title Games live with my wife Michele (as a fan) I have lived the dream.  And I must say the latest National Championship in Atlanta rivals that 92 game from the standpoint of excitement and awe.

You hear players say “I dreamed of playing at Bama” – well as a fan, growing up in the tiny town of Goodwater Alabama, I dreamed of seeing Bama play in person.  That dream came true as I saw my first Bama game in 1977, at the age of 18.  Of course Bama rolled to a 55-6 victory over the Cardinals of Louisville in a game that is forever etched in my memory.

Back in those days, memorabilia wasn’t available like it is now, and I became a collector of “unique” Bama stuff.   Good luck stuff – and the passion of collecting Alabama Memorabilia began to rival the passion of being a fan.  Whether it was a statue of an Elephant or a Bama Football player, and I begin to collect unique things as the years passed.

My collection of unique Memorabilia has continued to grow, and turned into my collection of Tide Rides. Each year for the past 8 years, one or more of the Tide Rides, have been part of the annual Bama Homecoming in Tuscaloosa.  That too has been a great experience as a fan, to see the faces of other fans enjoy the parade.

I developed this space to share those with you as a collector or as a Bama fan, I hope you enjoy.

Each week during football season, I update this site (Blog-Scroll Down) and share my thoughts and my predictions about the upcoming game.

To the left, you can click on the links for portions of my collection and the Tide Rides.

I would like to invite you to check out what the folks at Reese's have done.  The official candy of NCAA football, contacted me with interest in doing a story about "TIDE RIDES" and the fan who would have such a collection.  Yours truly obliged, and it was a good decision.  The crew spent a few hours with Michele and me and were the nicest people.  The entire crew was fantastic, but special thanks to Joey, Sarah and Marty.  You are welcome back anytime !!! There is a link at the bottom for you to enjoy the segment..entitled, "BAMA'S BIGGEST FAN"  ....yeah, I know.....  keep the comments about the title to yourselves...

Sugar Bowl - Bama Vs Ohio State -

History in the Making - Bama, once again finds itself in the midst of it.  Alabama and 3 other teams, Ohio State, Oregon and Florida State are taking part in the first ever College Football Playoff.  Bama is no stranger to such historic events, as in 1992 Bama played in the first SEC Championship game vs the Fla Gators.  That worked well for Bama - as they went on to win the National Championship against Miami.

Let's hope Bama has the same result as history is again being made.   Speaking of SEC Championship Games - Bama cruised to an easy 42 to 14 victory over the Mizo Tigers.

The final edition of the "Selection Committee" resulted in Bama being the top seed, and playing vs Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl, as Oregon and Fla State are dueling in the Rose.  Winner, will move on to Dallas on Jan 12 to play for the first College Playoff Champion.

Vegas and most "prognosticators" have Bama as a big favorite in this game... double digits in most corners - and given the circumstances that OSU has a 3rd string QB starting in a game this big, it makes sense.  However that same QB led the Bucks to a 59 - 0 Victory in the Big 10 Champ game - vs Wisconsin.   I know Bama isn't Wisconsin, but you have to remember what Coach Bryant was fond of saying, "I don't care who you play, even if it is sisters of the poor, to score (59) and hold them to zero, that is a good team."

Wisconsin did what they could to help, with turnovers and sloppy play, but OSU is a great team with what appears to be a very talented offense who is averaging 45 PPG and 508 Total yards per game, while surrendering 21 and 327 respectively.  How does that compare to Bama ?  Bama 37 PPG and 488, defensively Bama 17 and 312.

So on paper as you can see this is an evenly matched game.  I think all the pressure is on Bama - because of what is at stake of course the same is at state for OSU, but they were not expected to be this far, and Bama well they were picked by many to be here.

Advantage to Bama playing in NOLA - easier tirp bigger fan base, however, remember this is the first time for playoff and many fans likely sat back and waited to see where the chips fall and plan to make the next step if possible to NCG in Dallas.

I sure hope to make that trip myself.

Week 15 - SEC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME ATLANTA

WOW WOW AND WOW - I have been following Bama for 50 years, I have seen some wow games, but no in my memory surpass the most recent meeting in the Iron Bowl.

Records broken - too many to mention, most points scored by both ever - 99...WOW - Bama gives up over 600 total yards - WOW and the final score 55-44 not really an indication - as Auburn scored with a minute left - to bring it from 36 to 44.

Bama trailed by 12 to reel off an offensive show by Cooper, Sims, and Yeldon like never before.  Auburn hitting long pass after long pass, making Bama's d-backs look like Jr. High players. WOW !!!

Now the next step in the gauntlet - the SECCG in Atlanta - Bama representing the West and Mizo the East.

At first look this looks like a cakewalk for Alabama - but I am not buying that, because Mizo is well coached, has a terrific defense - including a great defensive line.   They have allowed 19.7 points - Bama gives up 16.9 per game.  Though I have only watched Mizo a couple of times this year, it appears to me they live off turnovers and the ability to stay close until the 4th and pull out a victory.

I look for the Tigers to slow the game down as much as possible and try to cause turmoil with Bama in their big strong D line.  Bama - well I always think Bama will win - and this game is no exception.  I do have a lot of concern - and believe Bama must - NOT TURN OVER THE BALL - BE ABLE TO THROW OVER THE TOP - BE ABLE TO PROTECT SIMS - OR SIMS MAKE THINGS HAPPEN WHEN HE BREAKS THE POCKET - HAVE NO OR FEW PENALTIES - and one of the biggest weapons this year - WIN THE KICKING GAME.  With that, Bama could run away with this one, but if Bama falters early, or has turnovers, we could have a donnybrook!!!
I think Bama wins in a game that is closer than expected by most !!!
