ROLL TIDE

17 National Championships –

I have been fortunate enough to witness the last 8 in person.

Funny thing is, in Alabama, seldom do you pick your “Team”.  It is usually handed down generation to generation.   You are either a Bama fan, or a fan of the team on the plains. Cool

My greatest memories of the Crimson Tide are numerous.  From my late Father and I listening to John Forney and Doug Layton paint the picture of each play via the radio in our living room, to watching the 92 National Championship Game live in NOLA with my late Mother.  Or the 2012 National Championship with our late son, Justin Hornsby. Seeing the last 5 National Title Games live with my wife Michele (as a fan) I have lived the dream.  And I must say the latest National Championship in Atlanta rivals that 92 game from the standpoint of excitement and awe.

You hear players say “I dreamed of playing at Bama” – well as a fan, growing up in the tiny town of Goodwater Alabama, I dreamed of seeing Bama play in person.  That dream came true as I saw my first Bama game in 1977, at the age of 18.  Of course Bama rolled to a 55-6 victory over the Cardinals of Louisville in a game that is forever etched in my memory.

Back in those days, memorabilia wasn’t available like it is now, and I became a collector of “unique” Bama stuff.   Good luck stuff – and the passion of collecting Alabama Memorabilia began to rival the passion of being a fan.  Whether it was a statue of an Elephant or a Bama Football player, and I begin to collect unique things as the years passed.

My collection of unique Memorabilia has continued to grow, and turned into my collection of Tide Rides. Each year for the past 8 years, one or more of the Tide Rides, have been part of the annual Bama Homecoming in Tuscaloosa.  That too has been a great experience as a fan, to see the faces of other fans enjoy the parade.

I developed this space to share those with you as a collector or as a Bama fan, I hope you enjoy.

Each week during football season, I update this site (Blog-Scroll Down) and share my thoughts and my predictions about the upcoming game.

To the left, you can click on the links for portions of my collection and the Tide Rides.

I would like to invite you to check out what the folks at Reese's have done.  The official candy of NCAA football, contacted me with interest in doing a story about "TIDE RIDES" and the fan who would have such a collection.  Yours truly obliged, and it was a good decision.  The crew spent a few hours with Michele and me and were the nicest people.  The entire crew was fantastic, but special thanks to Joey, Sarah and Marty.  You are welcome back anytime !!! There is a link at the bottom for you to enjoy the segment..entitled, "BAMA'S BIGGEST FAN"  ....yeah, I know.....  keep the comments about the title to yourselves...

It's the Traditional 3rd Saturday in October..(it's really the 4th, but whos counting)
Despite having an off day from QB gret McElroy..and 4 turnovers, Bama managed to handle the GameCocks 20 - 6.  Again the Tide D was magnificent.  The offense on the other hand (exception Mark Ingram) didn't play as well as in other games this year.   Ingram however now owns the record for a Bama back in Bryant Denny with 24 carries for 248 yards.  Heisman talk abounds... and I must admit in the final quarter on an 80 yard drive, Ingram in the "WILDCAT" formation litterly carried the team on his shoulders to a TD that put the game away.  Bamas win and a squeaker from Florida over Arkansas, and Texas sputtering but winning against Okl... and Bama is now Ranked 1 in the AP Poll, but in the BCS remains number two....all that is not important to fans from here to Knoxville because it is The Third Saturday in October.  Technically its the 4th but us Bama Fans see it different.

For Bama Fans - Just the mention of the fabled Third Saturday In October - and I promise, the hair on your arms...neck...various parts ...will certainly stand at attention.  NOTHING SUCKS LIKE THE BIG ORANGE.  I like most Bama fans, was taught early in life to Hate Tennessee.  The Storied Traditional Rivalry riles Bama Fans and Vol fans alike.   This series was made famous before Coach Bryant, but he certainly did his part as well....back in his day... this week in Practice he would Blare ROCKY TOP through the PA at practice...to make the players hate it... and hate it they would.  Prior to and a bit after his retirement Bama owned the Vols. But.... that changed in recent times.... with the Vols going on a streak.  Alabama leads the all-time series with Tennessee, 46-38-7, in a series that dates back to the 1901 season. The Crimson Tide has won the last two meetings and seeks its third straight series win for the first time since a seven-game winning streak from 1986-92.

The Vols have looked terrible and have looked Good this season.  Loosing to Auburn, UCLA and to Florida, and Wins agains Ga, Western Kentucky and  Ohio.

Bama well you know their record.
The Line is 17 ...and that is about how I see this one....

30 PPG Streak Broken, but it's a W

Bama's Defense played lights out... in the First half, against what was reveled by many as a strong offense.  I only have to quote one stat for you to understand.

Halftime   Ole Miss - 1 First Down 19 Total Yards WOW.

The Bama offense could never get it going... but Tiffin did connect on 5 FGS and Bama on 4th down hands to Ingram who sprints for a TD - on a 36 yard scamper UNTOUCHED for the only TD of the day.   The Rebs did manage FG to avoid the Shutout.  Final Score 22- 3

HOMECOMING - Of course I love the HC festivities and the smiles on everyones face when we come around the corner in the Tide Rides as literly hundreds of supports are on the pathway to cheer us on.... during the Parade.

Bama has a Football game too.. and not a patsy on the schedule either... South Carolina Game Cocks.   Bama has been picked as a 14 to 17 pt favorite, but this one has the makings of a close game as SC will be fired up about playing the No. 2 team in the nations (Bama jumped Texas in the polls) this week.  ESPN has this as the Prime Time Game at 6:45... the weather is suppose to be very Football like with lows in the 40's.  The ole ball coach has been saying they don't have much of a chance... poor mouthing at it's best...  Carolina has one loss on the schedule so far...against...Ga 41 - 37 but I do believe the SC Defense has improved since then.  Offensively they are beginning to run the ball with success, and actually have more running plays than passing.

Look for Bama's D to set the pace in this game... they have created 9 Turnovers in the last 2 games and playing in front of the HC crowd should ignite them.   McElroy is back at home too and seems to play much better at home.

Bama 31 - SC 10

Bama Shines Bright on The Old Kentucky Home
Again Bama wins, and again they score more than 30 points.  I was on hand in Lexington to see Bama dispose of the Wildcats in workman like fashion again.  This time, the task at had wasn't quite so easy.  Final score Bama 38 Kentucky 20.  McElroy was again very efficient, although he did have a bit of a slow start.  The defense scored a TD and caused a very critical turnover making it very difficult for Kentucky to stay with them.

Over 200 yards rushing and a buck and a half passing Bama ended the day with over 350 total yards, but honestly never seemed as in sync as games past.  Rolando McClain played a fantastic game and earned himself SEC Defensive Player of the Week Honors.

This week, Bama travels to Oxford Ms. to take on Houston Nutt and the Rebs.  Once ranked 4th but now in the lower teir of the top 25... after being beaten by South Carolina.   The Rebs defeated Vandy last week 23 - 7.
This, like Kentucky is one of those game that is a bit concerning to me, because... it is one of those game that would be easy to drop.   Bama has not shown any signs of not taking care of business, but Nutt has a way of making his team play above their heads.   The line on this one is about 7 with Bama on the road.   I too look for it to be a close one, and Bama pulling away in the final stanza.

Look for the Tide to take the Rebs 35 - 17

BAMA ON THE ROAD FOR THE FIRST TIME - Blue Grass
Bama took care of business in a business like fashion last week against the HAWGS.  With a 35 - 7 victory... and a very convincing show.  A great run by Trent "ATRAIN" Richardson... McElroy continues to impress... Bama had 3 plays over yards.  Heard today this Bama offense is averaging over 35 points a game the most of any Bama team since 1920...wow.

Bama lost a key element in the Defense last week with Donte Hightower falling to an injury to his knee.  Had it scoped . but out of the year.

For this week, Bama travels to the BlueGrass State to take on the Cats.
Florida really took care of the Cats last week, in Lexington...leading 31 to zip at the half.

Bama is favored by 17 and if they play as they have up to now, well they should cover.

I think Bama will take care of Business as they have and will not be looking forward to Ole Miss.  With so many top 10 teams loosing to underdogs, the Tide is aware of what can happen.

Look for Bama to Roll.... Bama 45 - 14
